Fyffe was born on 20 March 1949 in Warracknabeal, Victoria. [3] [4] He attended primary school in Cannum and Caramut, before going to high school in Hamilton. Fyfe rose to be Flight Commander in charge of maintenance of the Air Force's Skyhawk Squadron at the age of 24. [4]He held positions at Telecom, and Postbank. [5] He was General Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Chief Operating Officer of ITV Digital in the UK (which went into bankruptcy while he was at the helm) and group general manager of Air New Zealand.

Fyfe was born in Kirkcaldy on 25 September 1930, the son of Douglas Fyfe, a watchmaker, and Mary Fyfe née Irvine. He attended Kirkcaldy High School, [3] before studying English literature at the University of Edinburgh.
