The Wee Bee was designed by William "Bill" Chana, Kenneth Coward, Karl Montijo and Jim Wilder, who designed the engine. They described it as big enough to carry a man and small enough to be carried by a man. [1] It was an all-metal cantilever mid-wing monoplane powered by a Kiekhaefer O-45-35 flat-twin piston engine. [1]
A bumblebee (or bumble bee, bumble-bee, or humble-bee) is any of over 250 species in the genus Bombus, part of Apidae, one of the bee families. This genus is the only extant group in the tribe Bombini , though a few extinct related genera (e.g., Calyptapis ) are known from fossils .
Bombus balteatus is a long-tongued bumblebee. Often the tongue length reaches two-thirds or more the length of the body. [5] This morphological feature allows them to specialize on flowers with long corollas. [6] In North America, workers can be identified by a distinctive black abdomen pattern and robust body. [5]
Bombus bifarius was first described by Ezra Townsend Cresson in the 1878 Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. [2] It is a member of the order Hymenoptera and the family Apidae, which also includes orchid bees, honey bees, and bumblebees. [1]
Bombus hortorum, the garden bumblebee or small garden bumblebee, is a species of bumblebee found in most of Europe north to 70°N, as well as parts of Asia and New Zealand. [2] It is distinguished from most other bumblebees by its long tongue used for feeding on pollen in deep-flowered plants. [ 3 ]
The "typical" color pattern of female californicus is black with only a single strong yellow band anteriorly on the thorax, and another single yellow band near the apex of the abdomen; males exhibit considerably more variation. [1] Bombus californicus nests in the ground, [7] in wooded areas, [1] and in urban areas. [8]
The bilberry bumblebee is rather small and compact, with a broad head and a short tongue. The queens have an average length of 16 mm (0.63 in), and a wingspan of 32 mm (1.3 in). [ 4 ] The corresponding lengths of the other castes are 12 mm (0.47 in) (worker) and 14 mm (0.55 in) (male). [ 5 ]
