At the river, Paces Ferry Road enters Fulton County and the Atlanta city limits and continues to its terminus at the western end of Atlanta's Buckhead area. Here, West Paces Ferry Road continues under I-75 at mile 255, and heads east through some of Atlanta's oldest and wealthiest Buckhead neighborhoods.
Pace was born in 1785 in Anson County, North Carolina to Stephen Pace and Catherine Gatewood Buchanan. In 1809, he moved to north Georgia. The area he settled is known today as Vinings, Georgia, but at the time was known as (Pace's) Crossroads and, later, Paces (now a neighborhood of Buckhead).
The main road through the community is Paces Ferry, which runs northwestward from West Paces Ferry Road (which in turn continues west to a dead-end after Ridgewood Rd). Northside Parkway is another major road through the area, carrying U.S. 41 and State Route 3, and becoming Cobb Parkway across the river in Cumberland.
Early on, Vinings was known as Crossroads, and then Paces, after Hardy Pace, circa 1830. He operated Pace's Ferry across the Chattahoochee River, in this area between Atlanta, Buckhead, and Smyrna. Paces Ferry Road is still the main east–west road through Vinings.

It stands on approximately 18 acres (73,000 m 2) on historic West Paces Ferry Road in north-northwest Atlanta. It was designed by Georgia architect A. Thomas Bradbury and officially opened on January 1, 1968.
The road was built, but not as a freeway; it is SR 300, the Florida–Georgia Parkway. I-475 is a western bypass of Macon , shortening the trip for through I-75 traffic. I-575 is a spur from near Marietta north to Canton and Nelson , and I-675 is a cutoff from I-75 south of Atlanta north to I-285 (Atlanta's perimeter )—east of I-75.
The MMIP will construct two express lanes in each direction between Paces Ferry Road (mile 19) and Henderson Road (mile 35). [23] This segment includes the addition of express lanes through major interchanges with I-75 , SR 400, and I-85 .
