What Our Lord Saw from the Cross (Ce que voyait Notre-Seigneur sur la Croix) is a c. 1890 watercolor painting by the French painter James Tissot. Mother Mary is shown wearing lapis blue and a pure white head covering. To her left shown consoling her is Saint John, wearing a vibrant red covering gazing up towards Jesus on the cross. The two figures to the right of the cross below Jesus’s feet are the patrons, separated only by a small crack in the earth.
Jesus himself is portrayed in a realistic fashion, with his body slumped and twisted rather unsettlingly as he is carried down the cross displaying the lifeless quality of his form. Jesus' physical body shape is very rounded, almost Rubenesque, raising the question of whether Rembrandt was influenced by Rubens' notably voluptuous figures. [2]
