The Marder 1A4 differs from the 1A3 only by the use of a cryptography-capable radio-set. The newest version of the Marder is the Marder 1A5 with advanced mine protection. The Marder I "Marten" (Sd.Kfz. 135) was a German World War II tank destroyer, armed with a 75 mm Pak-40 anti-tank gun. Most Marder Is were built on the base of the Tracteur Blindé 37L (Lorraine) , a French artillery tractor/ armoured personnel carrier of which the Germans had acquired more than 300 units after the Fall of France in 1940.

On 8 July 2024, it was reported in an article by David Axe that the 100th Mechanized Brigade had been equipped with German 1A3 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, reportedly giving the brigade its first major protected mobility and firepower. This became the first unit within the Ukrainian Ground Forces to receive 1A3 Marder vehicles. [25] [26]
