For long-distance transport Siracusa is the southern terminal of InterCity and Express trains to Rome, Turin, Milan and Venice, linking it also with Genoa, Naples, Bologna, Florence, Pisa and other cities. The first station on the site was built in 1866 on a design by the architect Enrico Alvino and it was opened on 7 May of the following year. The current station was designed in 1954 by Pier Luigi Nervi, Carlo Cocchia, Massimo Battaglini, Bruno Zevi, Giulio De Luca, Luigi Piccinato and Giuseppe Vaccaro on the site of the old railway station and overlooks the square dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi.
Trieste Centrale railway station (IATA: TXB) (Italian: Stazione ferroviaria di Trieste Centrale; formerly German: Triest Südbahnhof) is the main station serving the city and municipality of Trieste, in the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northeastern Italy.
The station is managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the commercial area of the passenger building by Centostazioni, while train services on the line to Novara are operated by Trenitalia. Each of these companies is a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), Italy's state-owned rail company.
