Adjacent to Anna Maria Island's bayside is the island of Key Royale, formerly known as School Key. It was uninhabited until 1960, when a bridge was built joining it to the Holmes Beach section of Anna Maria Island and development began. It is included in the city limits of Holmes Beach. [12]

Anna Maria is part of the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 968 at the 2020 census, [4] down from 1,503 in 2010. The city occupies the northern part of Anna Maria Island and is one of three municipalities on the island. The others are Holmes Beach in the center and Bradenton Beach in the south.
The Ilexhurst club house became property of the North Bradenton Beach Company, part of the Bradenton Beach development growing just south of Ilexhurst. [9] The name of the clubhouse was changed to Gulf Beach Hotel and much of the southern end of the property in Ilexhurst was replatted once again under the name North Bradenton Beach. [10]
