390 FE V8 in a 1969 Ford Mustang. The 390 had a bore of 4.05 inches (102.87 mm), stroke of 3.785 inches (96.14 mm), and displacement of 390.04 cu in (6.4 L). It was the most common FE engine in later applications; used in many Ford cars as the standard engine, including the Thunderbird, and in many trucks as well.
4.0L was produced by Ford Cologne Germany (like the unrelated and the all-new metric Taurus/Sable FWD 3.0 V6). Both were put in the North American Ranger, Aerostar, Explorer platforms. The 4.0L bellhousing and the 3.0L bellhousings "MAY" interchange, but they do not interchange with the previous Cologne engines.
For the 1969 model year, Ford produced an overall "performance package", which was available with two smaller V8s - the 351 cu in (5.8 L) Windsor (standard) and 390 cu in (6.4 L) FE, and topped by the Cobra Jet. It included some additional handling upgrades and heavy appearance enhancements and was dubbed the "Mach 1". [1]
The 429 was developed to replace the three largest FE-series V8s, the 390, 427, and 428. It shared its 4.36-inch bore with the 460, but was destroked to 3.59-inches. The engine was introduced in the 1968 Ford Thunderbird, and saw use across Ford and Mercury full-size, intermediate, and pony car product lines.
A high performance option for 1962 added "tripower" - three two barrel carburetors - to a higher compression version of the 390 engine. It used 406 heads as well as the same carburetors that were found on the high performance 406 powered Ford Galaxie, but with a modified version of the intake manifold to allow for proper air flow under the engine.
