Ned is the son of Homer Keith Jarrett (1908–1983) and his wife, Eoline Marie (nee Leatherman) (1910–2002). They were married February 8, 1928 in Gaffney, South Carolina. Ned married first Olene Rebecca Proctor (1933–2014) on January 14, 1950 in Cherokee County, South Carolina. Together they had Glenn Ned Jarrett (b. August 11, 1950).

Jarrett was born on November 26, 1956, [3] in Conover, North Carolina, the middle child of Ned and Martha. [4] Jarrett has an older brother, Glenn; and a younger sister, Patti. [4] Jarrett's father Ned competed in the NASCAR Grand National Division between 1953 and 1966, [5] winning two series championships in 1961 and 1965. [6]
Ned Jarrett drove to a substantial lead early in the event, but a damaged wheel hub caused him to fall 20 laps behind while it was repaired. Richard Petty led the most laps, 103, before having his steering break due to the rough track conditions. [ 9 ]
Later, he was teamed with Ned Jarrett and Benny Parsons. [5] The trio was one of the most popular announcing crews in NASCAR. By the early 1990s, the crew (sans Jarrett, who was contracted with CBS) would also cover races on ABC Sports, including the Brickyard 400 from 1994 to 2000.
