The name Marítimo, meaning Maritime in English, was used to reflect the fact that many of the team's players were workers of the nearby Funchal docks, a prominent employer at the time. The first ever match for Marítimo was a 2–1 win against Santa Clara, a select team composed of workers of the Western Telegraph Company.
Marítimo won their first regional cup title in 2001 and their recent won in 2010, the latter who made their only national cup participation. They came back to the cup finals in 2015 and 2018, each failing to win a title to Académica Porto Novo and finished as a finalist, the latter lost 2–1 in extra time.

Sport Clube Marítimo, better known as Marítimo Graciosa is a Portuguese sports club from Santa Cruz da Graciosa, Azores. The men's football team plays in the district league. The team enjoyed spells in the Terceira Divisão in 2005 to 2007 and 2012–13. [1] The team also contested the Taça de Portugal during these years.
