What Causes Clogged Arteries? Much of the blame for clogged arteries comes down to diet, according to Dr. Briana Costello, MD , general and interventional cardiologist at The Texas Heart Institute .
PCI is used to open a blocked coronary artery/arteries and to restore arterial blood flow to heart muscle, without requiring open-heart surgery. In patients with acute coronary syndromes, PCI may be appropriate; guidelines and best practices are constantly evolving. [ 5 ]
The procedure uses balloons to open pulmonary arteries that have been narrowed or blocked by webs, bands and fibrous tissue [2] and therefore restores blood flow to the lungs, reduces shortness of breath, and improves exercise tolerance. More data on its safety and effectiveness are still required. [3] [4]
Peripheral angioplasty refers to the use of a balloon to open a blood vessel outside the coronary arteries. It is most commonly done to treat atherosclerotic narrowings of the abdomen, leg and renal arteries caused by peripheral artery disease.
The stent is then expanded to dilate (open) blocked or narrowed coronary arteries (narrowed by plaque buildup), caused by a condition known as atherosclerosis. Peripheral arterial access is usually via the femoral (upper leg) or the radial artery (arm/wrist) and less commonly performed via the brachial or ulnar artery (wrist/arm).
Reperfusion therapy is a medical treatment to restore blood flow, either through or around, blocked arteries, typically after a heart attack (myocardial infarction (MI)). Reperfusion therapy includes drugs and surgery. The drugs are thrombolytics and fibrinolytics used in a process called thrombolysis.
