Dariush Mehrjui (Persian: داریوش مهرجویی ; 8 December 1939 – 14 October 2023) was an Iranian filmmaker and a member of the Iranian Academy of the Arts. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Mehrjui was a founding member of the Iranian New Wave movement of the early 1970s, which also included directors Masoud Kimiai and Nasser Taqvai .
Mehrjui, 83, was a renowned cofounder of Iran's film new wave in the early 1970s that mainly focused on realism, and had been a vocal critic of state censorship. Last year, he strongly protested against a government decision to ban his latest film.
The Cow (Persian: گاو, Gāv, Gaav, or Gav) is a 1969 Iranian film directed by Dariush Mehrjui, written by Gholam-Hossein Saedi based on his own play and novel, and starring Ezzatolah Entezami as Masht Hassan. Some critics consider it the first film of the Iranian New Wave. [1] [2] [3]
