Men-yoroi (面鎧), also called menpō (面頬) or mengu (面具), [1] [2] [3] are various types of facial armour that were worn by the samurai class and their retainers in feudal Japan. These include the sōmen , menpō , hanbō or hanpō , and happuri .

The Japanese used many different weave methods to produce kusari mail, including: a square 4-in-1 pattern (so-gusari), a hexagonal 6-in-1 pattern (hana-gusari), [8] and a European 4-in-1 (nanban-gusari), [9] the kusari links could be doubled up, and some examples were tripled in a possible attempt to make the kusari bullet resistant. For the most part the ō-yoroi was a rich man's armor and not used by lower ranking samurai. The armor was mainly worn by the higher ranking samurai on horseback. The lower ranking soldiers had armor that was similar to the ō-yoroi, but had fewer components, was lighter, and lacked the decorative markings of the higher ranking samurai. [4]
