Olympia Jean Snowe (née Bouchles; born February 21, 1947) is an American businesswoman and politician who was a United States Senator from Maine from 1995 to 2013. Snowe, a member of the Republican Party, became known for her ability to influence the outcome of close votes, including whether to end filibusters.
King won Maine's 2012 Senate election to replace the retiring Republican Olympia Snowe and took office on January 3, 2013. He was reelected to a second term in 2018 , following the state's inaugural instant-runoff voting elections, and won a third term in 2024 against Republican nominee Demi Kouzounas and Democratic nominee David Costello.
The Tea Party Express had promised to aid in a primary against Snowe. [2] There had also been speculation that Snowe would switch parties, though she has always denied this. [3] [4] [5] By June 2011, Snowe had officially entered her name with signatures to run in the Republican primary, saying, she "would never switch parties".
Maine was admitted to the Union on March 15, 1820. The state's U.S. senators belong to class 1 and class 2. Republican Susan Collins (first elected in 1996) and Independent Angus King (first elected in 2012) are Maine's current U.S. senators, making Maine one of four states to have a split United States Senate delegation.

In 1994, when then-Congresswoman Olympia Snowe decided not to seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives for Maine's 2nd congressional district, Zirnkilton sought to replace her. Zirnkilton lost the primary to fellow State Representative Rick Bennett , who eventually lost the general election to State Senator John Baldacci .
Upon the decision of Olympia Snowe to not seek re-election to the United States Senate, Raye briefly considered running for her seat, but ultimately decided to enter the House primary, [7] which Raye won on June 12, 2012, to become the nominee. [8] Raye received 41.8% of the vote and lost to incumbent Michaud.
