Herbert R. Gibson and his wife, Belva, opened Gibson Products Co., a wholesale novelty company, in 1936 in Abilene, Texas. [1] By the late 1950s, Gibson had decided to refocus on discounting, and he opened the first Gibson's Discount Center in Abilene in 1960. [2] The company grew mostly by franchising the store concept to others.
Their first tractor was the model A; production started in Seattle, Washington, sometime after 1938, but moved to Longmont, Colorado, in 1946, after the corporation was pressured to unionize, and later models were made here as well. The Gibson, Inc. Factory and Office Building, consists of the original 1917 building and ten subsequent additions completed between 1917 and 1965, covering a city block. The original 1917 factory building, located in the southeast corner of the property, is a "daylight" style factory constructed of cast-in-place concrete.
