Andrei Nikolayevich Tupolev (Russian: Андрей Николаевич Туполев; 10 November [O.S. 29 October] 1888 – 23 December 1972) was a Russian and later Soviet aeronautical engineer known for his pioneering aircraft designs as the director of the Tupolev Design Bureau.
The aircraft involved in the accident was a Tupolev Tu-124V with two Soloviev D-20P engines, registered CCCP-45028 to the Soviet Union's state airline, Aeroflot.At the time of the accident, the aircraft had accumulated 1,612 flight hours and 1,151 pressurization cycles in service.
Tupolev OKB was founded by Andrei Tupolev in 1922. Its facilities are tailored for aeronautics research and aircraft design only, manufacturing is handled by other firms. It researched all-metal airplanes during the 1920s, based directly on the pioneering work already done by Hugo Junkers during World War I.
