It is composed of two villages, Dindeștiu Mic (Kisdengeleg) and Petrești. In 1740, count Sándor Károlyi colonized the village with a German population.

It lies in the Székely Land, an ethno-cultural region in eastern Transylvania, and is not to be confused with the large city of Satu Mare in Satu Mare County. It is composed of a single village, Satu Mare.
