Windermere or Lake Windermere [a] is a ribbon lake in Cumbria, England, and part of the Lake District. [5] It is the largest lake in England by length, area, and volume, but considerably smaller than the largest Scottish lochs and Northern Irish loughs .
The map shows the locations of the lakes with a volume over 4 x 10 6 m³ and gives an indication of the volume of water in each lake. The markers suggest this by showing the size of a drop of water where the volume of the drop would be in proportion to the quantity of water in the lake (the diameter of the drop is proportional to the cube root of the lake's volume).
The longest ice skating trail can be found on the Lake Windermere Whiteway. The naturally frozen trail measures 29.98 kilometres (18.63 mi). [4] When Guinness Book of World Records verified the record in 2014, the ice measured between 12 inches (30 cm) and 30 inches (76 cm) depending where you were in one of the four loops that runs continuously around the lake.
Murray and Pullar (1910) note that the mean depth of Loch Ness is 57.4% of the maximum depth – higher than in any other large deep loch in Scotland. [2] The deepest lake in England is Wast Water which descends to 76 metres (249 ft).
Windermere (/ ˈ w ɪ n d ər m ɪər /) is a town in the civil parish of Windermere and Bowness, in the Westmorland and Furness district in the ceremonial county of Cumbria, England; it is within the Lake District National Park. The town lies about half a mile (1 km) east of the lake, Windermere, from which it takes its name. [2]
Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes but bests its cousins in several other ways. Find out more about all the Great Lakes.
Therefore, mean depth figures are not available for many deep lakes in remote locations. [9] The average lake on Earth has the mean depth 41.8 meters (137.14 feet) [9] The Caspian Sea ranks much further down the list on mean depth, as it has a large continental shelf (significantly larger than the oceanic basin that contains its greatest depths).
