Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that typically affects adults around 54–67 [1] years of age, although anyone can be diagnosed with the disease. People diagnosed with ALS live on average 2–4 years after diagnosis due to the quick progression of the disease.
ALS can strike at any age, but its likelihood increases with age. [64] Most people who develop ALS are between the ages of 40 and 70, with an average age of 55 at the time of diagnosis. [ 65 ] ALS is 20% more common in men than women, [ 65 ] but this difference in sex distribution is no longer present in patients with onset after age 70.
Symptoms of motor neuron diseases can be first seen at birth or can come on slowly later in life. Most of these diseases worsen over time; while some, such as ALS, shorten one's life expectancy, others do not.
