In 2019, the UK Government announced a new building would be constructed for the High Commission, on property next to Earnscliffe. The new building opened 04 September 2024. [1]
The British High Commissioner's residence is Earnscliffe in Ottawa on Sussex Drive. The house was built in 1855, was later occupied by Canada's first prime minister, John A. Macdonald, and was bought in 1930 by the first British High Commissioner to Canada, Sir William Clark.

The United Kingdom is one of two countries, the other being Thailand, that use diplomatic flags abroad. These special flags are flown at the chanceries of their embassies and consulates. For High Commissions, the Union Flag is used. In addition, there is a flag in use for British consular vessels in international or foreign waters.

A British High Commission is a British diplomatic mission, equivalent to an embassy, found in countries that are members of the Commonwealth of Nations. Their general purpose is to provide diplomatic relationships as well as travel information, passports, dual-citizenship information, and other services between Commonwealth states.
The United Kingdom does not maintain a full embassy or High Commission in a number of countries. In each of these cases the head of mission to another country, usually a neighbouring one, is also accredited to the other country (except, at present, for the ambassadors to Haiti and Honduras, who are dedicated but non-resident).
