A diverterless supersonic inlet (DSI) consists of a "bump" and a forward-swept inlet cowl, which work together to divert boundary layer airflow away from the aircraft's engine while compressing the air to slow it down from supersonic speed. The DSI can be used to replace conventional methods of controlling supersonic and boundary layer airflow.
The bypass ratio (BPR) of a turbofan engine is the ratio between the mass flow rate of the bypass stream to the mass flow rate entering the core. [1] A 10:1 bypass ratio, for example, means that 10 kg of air passes through the bypass duct for every 1 kg of air passing through the core.
For commercial jet aircraft the jet noise has reduced from the turbojet through bypass engines to turbofans as a result of a progressive reduction in propelling jet velocities. For example, the JT8D, a bypass engine, has a jet velocity of 400 m/s (1,450 ft/s) whereas the JT9D, a turbofan, has jet velocities of 300 m/s (885 ft/s) (cold) and 400 ...
The General Electric CF6, US military designations F103 and F138, is a family of high-bypass turbofan engines produced by GE Aviation. Based on the TF39, the first high-power high-bypass jet engine, the CF6 powers a wide variety of civilian airliners. The basic engine core also powers the LM2500 and LM6000 marine and power generation turboshafts.
The engine's name is a combination of the Roman numeral V, symbolizing the five original members of the International Aero Engines consortium, formed in 1983 to produce the engine, and 2500, which represents the 25,000-pound-force (110 kN) thrust produced by the original engine model, the V2500-A1.
The type of jet engine used to explain the conversion of fuel into thrust is the ramjet. It is simpler than the turbojet which is, in turn, simpler than the turbofan. It is valid to use the ramjet example because the ramjet, turbojet and turbofan core all use the same principle to produce thrust which is to accelerate the air passing through them.
An annular combustor is used. There is no forced mixing before the bypass and core streams leave the engine through a common nozzle. The engine is controlled with a dual channel Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system. [2] The PW307A is a new centre-line engine developed specifically for a tri-jet application on the Dassault Falcon 7X.
In December 1980, Pratt & Whitney changed to a new naming system for its engines and the JT10D became the PW2037. The PW2000 is a dual-spool, axial air flow, annular combustion, high bypass turbofan with a dual-channel full authority digital engine control system. It was certified in 1984 as the first civilian FADEC-controlled aviation engine.
