Pratt was founded in 1976 by the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation [2] and named in honor of slain civil rights leader Edwin T. Pratt. Gary Faigin was born on September 17, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan.His parents were both teachers. As a college student during the Vietnam War, Faigin dropped out of the residential college at the University of Michigan to travel to San Francisco to participate in the communal movement at its high point, in the early 1970s.

As a youth, Butler studied in Seattle under Carlotta Blaurock, who had been, in turn, a student of James McNeill Whistler. He also studied with Ella Shepard Bush (founder in 1894 of the Seattle Art School [2]) and other local artists. Some of his early work was exhibited at Seattle's 1909 Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition.
Rain activated art is a kind of street art, called "rainworks" by the creator, Seattle artist Peregrine Church. It utilizes a superhydrophobic coating on a sidewalk which is invisible when dry, but when it rains, reveal a pattern created by the artist. [ 1 ]
