First sign for the Gunflint Trail in Grand Marais. County State-Aid Highway 12 (CSAH 12), also known as the Gunflint Trail, or County Road 12 (CR 12), is a 57-mile (92 km) paved roadway and National Scenic Byway in Cook County, Minnesota, that begins in Grand Marais and ends at Saganaga Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), near the U.S. border with Ontario.
The Root River State Trail was initially authorized by the Minnesota State Legislature in 1971. The state of Minnesota bought 49 miles of abandoned rail bed in 1981 for $975,000. The Root River State Trail was built on 35 mi (56 km) of this acquisition. Development of the trail started in 1985 and was completed in 1988 with the $2M in state bonds.
County Road 133 (sometimes referred to as Highway 133 or County 133) runs from US Highway 53 in Northland Township and travels 28 miles west to the Itasca County line at Itasca County Road 25, passing through Meadowlands along the way.
