Bishop Lucey Park, sometimes known locally as the "People's Park", [2] is a public park located between Grand Parade and South Main Street in the centre of Cork in Ireland. It is one of few green spaces in the city centre and among the most widely used. [3] The park was closed for redevelopment from December 2023. [4]
Cork (Irish: Corcaigh [ˈkɔɾˠkəɟ]; from corcach, meaning 'marsh') [6] is the second largest city in Ireland, the county town of County Cork, the largest city in the province of Munster and third largest on the island of Ireland. At the 2022 census, it had a population of 224,004. [5]
The park is approximately 12 acres in size and contains a pond, the Cork Public Museum, sculpture trail, bandstand, a café and a large children's play area. [ 5 ] [ 6 ] The area of the park is joined to Sunday's Well across the River Lee by Daly's bridge (a pedestrian suspension bridge known locally as the "Shakey Bridge").
Between March and April 2018, Cork City Council banned afternoon traffic on Patrick Street, with only public transport traffic allowed between 3:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. While the ban was lifted within a few weeks, due to a reported impact on city centre traders, [6] [7] it was subsequently reinstated. Its enforcement has reportedly been inconsistent.
Bishopstown (Irish: Baile an Easpaig, meaning 'town of the Bishop') [1] is a suburb of Cork, located in the south west of the city.It is made-up of the townlands of Ballineaspigbeg and Ballineaspigmore (sometimes spelled Ballinaspigmore), [2] and is located in the civil parish of St. Finbar's in the historical Barony of Cork.
