Chuck Akulis' first time on a racetrack was a 1960 "greenhorn" event at Penn Can Speedway in Susquehanna PA. Competing with other beginners in a car borrowed from his brother-in-law, Akulis ended his race with a wreck. He went on to be a regular winner at Penn Can, competing at the speedway until 2000, and winning 9 track championships [4] [5] [6]
Sammy Beavers began racing in the novice division at the Nazareth Speedway PA in 1958 with a1939 Ford coupe powered by a 1953 Mercury flathead engine. He later joined the Sportsman ranks, winning the 1961-1962 Flemington Speedway NJ Sportsman title. Beavers' first Modified victory was the inaugural feature race at the Harmony Speedway NJ in 1963.
In 2012, Mike Colsten was diagnosed with mesothelioma. During surgeries, treatment and recovery, he continued to compete, and claimed two of his five track championships at Five Mile Point Speedway.
