"The Selangor Raja School" was established as an English-mediated educational initiative to educate the Malay elites such as the members of the royal families in various Malayan states. In 1894, the school was closed for renovation and was reopened in 1905 at Kuala Kangsar , to this day known as the Malay College Kuala Kangsar ( MCKK ).
On 29 November 1958, the school was given a new name. The then Minister of Education, Mohamed Khir Johari, officially announced the school's new name as Sekolah Dato’ Abdul Razak, in honour of Dato’ Abdul Razak Hussein, who was the brainchild behind the school formation.
The college became formally known as Kolej MARA Seremban on 3 February 1994. In 2000, The UKM Matriculation Programme was abolished to make way for the Malaysian Education Ministry Matriculation Programme. This change was made as the Ministry of Education Malaysia took over all matriculation programmes in the country to unify the curriculum.

SMAPL also maintained the record for being the first school in Malaysia to have 100% of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia candidates achieving Grade 1 for three years in a row: 1996, 1997, 1998.

It was established in 1959 or to be exactly on 1 June 1959. It is located at Jalan Tunku Kursiah, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. In 2008, SHAMS had been awarded "Sekolah Kluster Kecemerlangan (SKK)". As one of the cluster school in Malaysia which is recognized internationally, SHAMS has signed an MoU with Madrasah Aliah Negeri, Bukit Tinggi, Indonesia.
