RV Kaharoa is a research vessel operated by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) of New Zealand.Launched in 1981, the vessel has undertaken a wide range of surveys, data from which has led to the discovery of several new species, such as a new species of eelpout, five new species of Fissuroderes and a new species of copepod in the genus Bradyidius.
It was also known [when?] as the Argo Plain; another suggested [by whom?] name is the Argo Abyssal Plain. It was discovered by the U.S. research vessel "Argo" of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1960. [1] It should be distinguished from an Australian sedimentary basin with the same name. The original Argo, used to find Titanic, was 15 feet (4.6 m)long, 3.5 feet (1.1 m) tall, and 3.5 feet (1.1 m) wide and weighed about 4,000 pounds (1,800 kg) in air. It had an array of cameras looking forward and down, as well as strobes and incandescent lighting to illuminate the ocean floor.
