[1] Founded by local journalist Tom Patterson in 1952, the festival was formerly known as the Stratford Shakespearean Festival , the Shakespeare Festival and the Stratford Shakespeare Festival .
In 1957 he appeared in Mary Stuart at the Phoenix Theatre in New York City and in 1963 he appeared in Troilus and Cressida at the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. At one point he started using the stage make Steve Rossi. According to Rossi, West picked "Steve" because she was dating actor Steve Cochran at the time, and the inspiration for "Ross" came from one of her managers named Bernie Ross; an "i" was added to the end of Ross to reflect Rossi's Italian heritage.
