The I/O engine itself is the same as the inboard engine. The obvious difference is the the transfer of power to the water. The I/o itself is the transmission and on the inboard there is a separate trans. So if you are asking could you buy a pair of donor 4.3 engines and swing them into your inboard chris craft than yes you can.

Outboard power can be replaced easier than inboard but diesel outboards are hard to find. Outboard motors tend to be in the way for trolling and they put their exhaust through the prop. If I had the funds for what I "want" it would be a pair of inboard common rail diesels.

The annual maintaiance on the diesel will be more expensive than the Yamaha outbaord but as noted already, the Yannmar will outlive you and your son if you keep the fuel clean, keep it cool (install a temp sensor) and make sure taht you never loose oil pressure (again, install another alarm).

I/O = a car engine with an out drive. motor designed for majority of life around 1500 tons (like a car) actually gets run at 3500 rpms (normal average cruising speed) Outboard = motor designed for marine use at high rpm’s. I/O longevity will never keep up with modern outboards. Reply Like. 06-18-2023, 05:46 PM.

Gas inboards make little sense on an offshore boat in that size range. The advantage they offer is a clean transom, but compared with 4 stroke outboard power they are slower, use more fuel, are harder to maintain, and more expensive to fix (and they need fixing a LOT more often when used on salt-water boats.)

An I/O or inboard with closed cooling can actually out last an outboard; if properly maintained. They cannot be used the same way though because an automotive based engine like the old school GMs were not designed to run at high revs like a 4 stroke or DI 2 stroke can. PS my 28 year old raw water cooled inboard is original.
