Edward Manlove and Alexander Alliott were drapers by trade. With J.G. Seyrig they set up a bleaching company and developed a centrifugal drying machine as the Centrifugal Company in Nottingham. [ 1 ] This evolved into the firm of Manlove, Allott & Co. Ltd. which was established in 1837.

In 1933 Ocean Highway was completed (the present-day Delaware Route 1 and now known as Coastal Highway) between Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach. Following that, Delaware built a span to connect the northern and southern segments of the highway. Since 1934, six bridges have spanned the inlet, all known informally as the Indian River Inlet Bridge.
