    You are perhaps thinking more along the lines of the Designated Marksman (DMR) or Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR) roles. The M1918 was used in the IAR role and was replaced as such by the full-auto M14. This was found to be lacking however as the M14 was (and remains) very hard to control in full-auto use.
