The genus name of Vahlodea is in honour of Jens Vahl (1796–1854), a Danish botanist and pharmacist. [3] The Latin specific epithet of atropurpurea means "dark-purple coloured". [4] Both the genus and the sole species were first described and published in Bot. Not. (1842) Vol.141 on page 178 in 1842. [2]
The hybrid is thought to be a cross between Forsythia viridissima and F. suspensa var. fortunei. [4] A plant of seedling origin was discovered growing in the Göttingen Botanical Garden in Germany by the director of the Royal Prussian Academy of Forestry in Münden, H. Zabel in 1878. [4]
