Fruita (/ ˈ f r uː t ə /) is a home rule municipality located in western Mesa County, Colorado, United States. [1] The city population was 13,395 at the 2020 United States census. [3] Fruita is a part of the Grand Junction, Colorado Metropolitan Statistical Area and lies within the Grand Valley.
Colorado Mesa University, a public liberal arts university serving roughly 9,000 students annually, is located in Grand Junction. CMU is western Colorado's largest university, making Mesa County an epicenter of the region's higher education. Grand Junction is also home to IntelliTec College, which offers professional certificates.
The Fruita Museum, at 432 E. Aspen in Fruita, Colorado, is a Rustic-style building which was built in 1938-39 as a Works Progress Administration project to serve as a museum. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. [1] In 2018, the building serves as home of the Fruita Area Chamber of Commerce and as a visitor center.
The James M. Robb – Colorado River State Park is a Colorado State Park along the Colorado River in Mesa County near Grand Junction, Colorado. The 890-acre (3.6 km 2) park established in 1994 has five distinct sections providing access to the river. The Island Acres segment has campsites and a swim beach. The Fruita segment also has campsites.

On September 10, 1945, farmer Lloyd Olsen of Fruita, Colorado, United States, was planning to eat supper with his mother-in-law and was sent out to the yard by his wife to bring back a chicken. Olsen chose a five-and-a-half-month-old Wyandotte chicken named Mike.
The structures are an example of the park services facilities designed and built as part of the Mission 66 program. The complex includes the visitor center, designed by National Park Service architect Cecil J. Doty, the Bookcliff Shelter, designed by NPS architect Phil Romigh, and the Canyon Rim Trail, designed by NPS landscape architects Babbitt Hughes, and built between 1963 and 1965.
