New Salem is an unincorporated community in Redbank Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It has also been known as Salem. The community is 24.1 miles (38.8 km) northeast of Kittanning and 7.1 miles (11.4 km) east of New Bethlehem .
New Salem, or York New Salem, added the prefix York because of a dispute between another borough with the same name in Pennsylvania. No two boroughs can have the same name for postal reasons, according to the federal government. New Salem was founded by settlers from Salem, Massachusetts and from settlers from nearby York.

New Salem is located in western Fayette County, in the southwestern part of Menallen Township. It is bordered to the west by Buffington and to the south, across Dunlap Creek, by German Township. New Salem Road leads southeast 7 miles (11 km) to Uniontown, the county seat, and northwest 3 miles (5 km) to Pennsylvania Route 166 south of Republic.
New Salem-Buffington was a census-designated place (CDP) in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States, and part of the Pittsburgh Metro Area. The population was 808 at the 2000 census. For the 2010 census the area was split into two CDPs, New Salem and Buffington. Both communities are located in Menallen Township.
Delmont was initially known as New Salem. The 300 acres of land was warranted to William Wilson in 1784, and upon his arrival in 1785, he named the area New Salem. In 1812, a post office was established in New Salem, "Salem X Roads" (Salem Crossroads), Pennsylvania. Hugh Bigham was the first postmaster.

Buffington is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Menallen Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The community was part of the New Salem-Buffington CDP, before it was split into two separate CDPs for the 2010 census. The population was 292 as of the 2010 census. [3]
