The state's congressional map is roughly divided by quadrants in the northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest sections of Iowa. The districts were represented by three Republicans and one Democrat from the 2014 elections to the 2020 elections , with a brief period of Democratic control after the 2018 elections.
The district has been represented in the United States House of Representatives by Republican Zach Nunn since 2023. Since the 1880s, there have been major changes in the location or nature of Iowa's 4th Congressional District. From 1886 until 1941, the district was made up of largely rural counties in northeastern Iowa, including the easternmost five counties in the northernmost two rows [3] (and, during the 1930s, Buchanan and Delaware counties from the third row). [4]
After redistricting, most of the old 1st district became the 2nd district. The reconfigured 2nd is located in northeastern Iowa and includes Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Mason City. Freshman Republican Ashley Hinson, who flipped the district with 51.2% of the vote in 2020, sought reelection in the 2nd.
