Veterans' health care in the United States is separated geographically into 19 regions (numbered 1, 2, 4–10, 12 and 15–23) [1] known as VISNs, or Veterans Integrated Service Networks, into systems within each network headed by medical centers, and hierarchically within each system by division level of care or type.
By the end of the year the number of patients in residence rose to almost 500 with 260 employees. Up until the end of World War II, most care at the hospital was custodial in nature, but in 1946, the hospital was reorganized and shifted from custodial care to more active treatment.

John J. Cochran Veterans Hospital is a 355-bed hospital located in St. Louis, Missouri. [1] It is one of two divisions of the VA St. Louis Health Care System (VASTLHCS), a healthcare provider under the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). [2] The other division is St. Louis VA Medical Center-Jefferson Barracks. [3]
It is the largest division in the department, and second largest in the entire federal government, employing over 350,000 employees. All VA hospitals, clinics and medical centers are owned by and operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs (as opposed to private companies), and all of the staff employed in VA hospitals are federal employees.
