The Health Brigade, formerly Fan Free Clinic, is a non-profit free community clinic located in the Museum District in Richmond, Virginia. [2] The clinic was first formed in 1968 by a nurse, two doctors and a minister and in 1970, was located on Floyd Avenue at the Emerson House of the First Unitarian Church before moving to their current location on Thompson Street.
The facility was established after World War II along State Route 10 and Richmond's Belt Boulevard, an early highway bypass. The Cheatham family had no choice but to give up their land under eminent domain. That area of the county, about 6 miles (10 km) from downtown Richmond in the Southside area, was annexed by the independent city in 1970.
In 1973, VCU doctor, Dr. Barry Kirkpatrick established the first neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Richmond at Children's Medical Center at MCV, which was the first one in Virginia. [6] In 1980, Crippled Children's Hospital changed their name to Children's Hospital to better reflect the variety of services offered. [7]
