Eastern Market is a commercial district in Detroit, Michigan.It is located approximately one mile (1.6 km) northeast of the city's downtown and is bordered on the south by Gratiot Avenue, the north by Mack Avenue, the east by St. Aubin Street, and the west by Interstate 75 (I-75, Chrysler Freeway).

The first stretch of greenway, a 1.2–mile section encompassing most of the Dequindre Cut, opened in 2009. [2] Construction began in September 2013 to build the remaining greenway half mile section from Mack Avenue to Gratiot. This segment includes a trail entrance into Eastern Market along the northwest side of the Wilkins Street bridge.

The northern area includes the Detroit Golf Club and neighborhoods which surround the main campus of the University of Detroit Mercy: [1] Pilgrim Village; Palmer Park Apartment Building Historic District; and the Palmer Woods Historic District. Pilgrim Village, developed in the 1920s, is bounded by Livernois, Idaho, Puritan and Fenkell.

In 1856, the Ferry Seed Company was founded in Detroit; the company established a large farm at the corner of East Ferry and Woodward to grow the seeds that were sold nationwide. [3] [note 1] In the mid-1880s, then-owner D. M. Ferry platted the farm into residential lots along East Ferry Avenue. [4]
