High Street, Newport (2005), looking south Newport Market, High Street entrance and modern pedestrianisation (2014) High Street is the main historical street and the original main thoroughfare in the centre of Newport, South Wales. Nowadays it runs approximately 280m between Westgate Square and the Old Green Interchange (facing Newport Castle).
From Bridge Street, the two roads of High Street and Cambrian Road run in parallel towards Newport railway station. Joining the two roads is the covered Victorian Newport Arcade. At the western end of the arcade is the Cambrian Centre which is being redeveloped. [4] To the east of High Street is Newport Market, a Grade II-listed building.
Newport became one of the largest towns in Wales and the focus for the new industrial eastern valleys of South Wales. By 1830 Newport was Wales' leading coal port, and until the 1850s it was larger than Cardiff. [7] The Newport Rising in 1839 was the last large-scale armed rebellion against authority in mainland Britain.

It contains the Newport Docks and the western ends of the Newport Transporter Bridge, [4] City Bridge and George Street Bridge. Pill hosts the annual Pill Carnival, on the last weekend of August. [5] The Old Town Dock area is currently undergoing a huge mixed-use regeneration to bring the derelict dock lands back into use.
The west pedestrian entrance is on Emlyn Street. The centre is a short walk from the high street shops of Commercial Street and High Street. Newport railway station is also a short walk away. The Kingsway car park on Emlyn Street has over 1000 spaces and the adjacent Friars Walk car park holds 350 cars, both accessed from the A4042 Kingsway.
