The list includes only hospitals that are currently licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health or operated by the Veterans Health Administration , according to data collected by the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is a $21 billion integrated global nonprofit health enterprise that has 89,000 employees, 40 hospitals with more than 8,000 licensed beds, 700 clinical locations including outpatient sites and doctors' offices, a 3.7 million-member health insurance division, as well as commercial and international ventures. The Pittsburgh Cancer Institute was founded in 1985 under the direction of Ronald B. Herberman, MD. [3] [4] In 1990, the center earned NCI designation. [5]The Hillman Cancer Center was opened in 2002 and housed the clinical services for UPMC Cancer Centers and research facilities for the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. [6]
Clinical cancer centers may apply for up to $1.4 million per year. Basic Laboratory Cancer Centers conduct only laboratory research and do not provide patient treatment. Basic Laboratory Cancer Centers are more often affiliated with research institutes rather than universities. They are eligible to apply for up to $1.2 million per year. [2]
UPMC Shadyside houses the flagship campus of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, a nationally ranked cancer hospital. [75] UPMC Shadyside is part of UPMC's flagship medical entity and is located in Pittsburgh's Shadyside neighborhood, with 520 beds and nearly 1,000 primary care physicians. [76]
In the 2019-20 Best Hospitals Honor Roll, UPMC Presbyterian ranked as the 15 best hospital in the United States with rankings in 11 of their specialties. [ 104 ] [ 105 ] In 2020 UPMC Presbyterian was awarded two Women's Choice Awards as top 6% in orthopedics and top 1% in cancer care. [ 106 ]
