The county was created in 1837 from the Wisconsin Territory. [6] When in December 1837, a new county was to be split off from the over-large Iowa County, William Boyles of Monroe, as the Representative of the area, was allowed to choose a name. He chose Green County, after the verdant color of the vegetation there.

The Green County Courthouse, located on Courthouse Square in Monroe, is the county courthouse serving Green County, Wisconsin. Built in 1891, it is the county's second permanent courthouse. Architect G. Stanley Mansfield designed the Richardsonian Romanesque building. The courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Wisconsin's 2nd congressional district is a congressional district of the United States House of Representatives in southern Wisconsin, covering Dane County, Iowa County, Lafayette County, Sauk County and Green County, as well as portions of Richland County and Rock County. [4]
Located in southern Wisconsin, the district comprises all of Green County, and parts of southwest Dane County including the southwestern exurban areas outside of Madison. It includes the cities of Brodhead and Monroe , and the villages of Albany , Belleville , Brooklyn , Browntown , Monticello , New Glarus , and Oregon .
