17 of the 34 seats in the West Virginia State Senate will hold elections, including 15 Republican-held seats and two Democratic-held seats. Three incumbents chose not to seek re-election: Republican David Stover and both Democrats Mike Caputo and Robert Plymale. Of the 17 seats up for election, 16 were won by Republican candidates.

It abandoned the practice used since the formation of the state of starting the numbering in the north, and rather divided the state in a northern and southern district, with the 1st being the more southerly one.
West Virginia's at-large congressional district existed between 1913 and 1917, during a period when the state failed to enact a redistricting plan that allowed for a new sixth district. Such a plan was adopted for the 1916 elections , making the at-large seat obsolete.
