Esperanza Rising is a young adult historical fiction novel written by Mexican-American author Pam Muñoz Ryan and released by Scholastic Press on 27 March 2000. [1] The novel focuses on Esperanza, the only daughter of wealthy Mexican parents, and follows the events that occur after her father's murder.
Muñoz Ryan was born in Bakersfield, California. [1] She is half Mexican with Basque, Italian, and Oklahoman cultural influences. [2]Muñoz Ryan has written over forty books for young people, including picture books, early readers, middle grade, and young adult novels.
Kirkus Reviews wrote "Ryan’s sure-handed storytelling and affection for her characters convey a clear sense of Naomi’s triumph, as she becomes “who I was meant to be.”" [1] and Publishers Weekly wrote "Once again, Ryan (Esperanza Rising ) crystallizes the essence of settings and characters through potent, economic prose."

Act I contains the setup. It is approximately the first quarter of a screenplay, and reveals the main character, premise, and situation of the story. Act II contains the confrontation. It lasts for the next two quarters of the screenplay, and clearly defines the main goal of the protagonist. Act III contains the resolution.
