Carrolltown is located in northern Cambria County at (40.603, -78.709), [5] approximately 20 miles west of Altoona. U.S. Route 219 passes through the borough, leading northwest 6 miles (10 km) to Northern Cambria and south 8 miles (13 km) to Ebensburg, the county seat.

It was renamed again in the late 1990s to Liberty Mountain Resort. In 2003, Snow Time, Inc added the Boulder Ridge Snow Tubing area. [4] In May 2010 Liberty Mountain purchased The Carroll Valley Resort giving Liberty a total of 99 rooms as well as adding two more restaurants (The Tavern on the Green and The Inn) and an 18-hole golf course.

The road curves southeast into open farmland before reaching the residential community of Nicktown, where it intersects PA 271. Here, PA 271 turns east to form a concurrency with PA 553 on Ridge Road, passing through more of the community. The road heads into agricultural areas where PA 271 turns to the north and PA 553 runs to the southeast.
