Lamesa (/ l ə ˈ m iː s ə / lə-MEE-sə) [5] is a city in and the county seat of Dawson County, Texas, United States. [6] The population was 8,674 at the 2020 census, down from 9,952 at the 2000 census. Located south of Lubbock on the Llano Estacado, Lamesa was founded in 1903. Most of its economy is based on cotton farming.
Don Sitton acquired the station in 1989 and was known as "The Voice of Lamesa." He remained with the station until his death in 2018. It was acquired by the previous owners in January 2008. Lamesa Independent School District is a public school district based in Lamesa, Texas . In addition to Lamesa, the district also serves the city of Los Ybanez. The Lamesa athletic teams are known as the Golden Tornadoes or "Tors" for short. In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. [1]
