Barton is a town in Orleans County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,872 at the 2020 census. [3] The town includes two incorporated villages, Barton and Orleans. Approximately a quarter of the town's population lives in each of the villages, and approximately half lives outside the villages. [4]
Barton Village owns Barton Electric which generates some of its power hydroelectrically and serves not only the village but a large portion of the village side of Barton town, plus West Charleston, North Sutton and much of Westmore. It services 2100 customers. [31] [32] It owns two turbines on the Clyde River in West Charleston. [33]
Internally, Vermont's 254 municipalities comprise ten cities, 237 towns and five unincorporated gores, governed by guidelines set by the state statutes and constitution. Towns govern themselves by direct citizen participation via town meeting. Between town meetings, town affairs are managed by a selectboard [35] or a town manager. [36]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square mile (1.8 km 2), all land. The village is at the northwestern corner of the town of Barton. At the edge of the village, the Willoughby River Falls is a 200-foot (61 m) long stretch of river with cascades and a chute.
