Devil's Lake State Park is a state park located in the Baraboo Range in eastern Sauk County, just south of Baraboo, Wisconsin. It is around thirty-five miles northwest of Madison , and is on the western edge of the last ice-sheet deposited during the Wisconsin glaciation . [ 2 ]

The park is on the edge of the Baraboo Range in an unglaciated Driftless Area of south-central Wisconsin. Outcrops of quartzite, hardened sand deposited about 1.6 billion years ago jut out of the tops of these hills. The arch and rock shelter have been weathered out of one such outcropping. The top of the arch is 35 feet (11 m) above the ground.

Geologically, it is a syncline fold consisting of highly eroded Precambrian metamorphic rock. It is about 25 miles (40 km) long and varies from 5 to 10 miles (16 km) in width.

State Trunk Highway 123 (often called Highway 123, STH-123 or WIS 123) is a former short state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It ran north–south in south central Wisconsin from the entrance to Devil's Lake State Park to Baraboo. It was phased out in June 2016 and turned over to local jurisdictions and County DL was extended.
An 1833 map, "Northwest and Michigan Territories" issued by Baldwin and Craddock for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge also depicted the western highlands of Wisconsin. Unlike James and Keating, it placed the label Ocooch Mountains further north, at the headwaters of the Black , La Crosse , Kickapoo and Pine rivers.
Large rivers, like the Wisconsin River and Fox River, have many islands as well. Doty Island, in the Fox River, is one mile wide and one and a half miles long. [44] French Island, in the Mississippi River within the city of La Crosse, covers an area of 2.02 square miles (5.2 km 2) and has a population of 4,207. [45]
