Eddie Lee Long (May 12, 1953 – January 15, 2017) was an American pastor who served as the senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, a megachurch in unincorporated DeKalb County, Georgia, from 1987 until his death in 2017. When Long started as pastor for New Birth Church, there were 300 church members, which grew to 25,000. [3]
The church was founded in 1939 in Scottdale as Travelers Rest Baptist Church. [1] In 1983, it moved to Decatur and adopted its current name. Eddie Long took over as pastor in 1987. At the time, the church had only 300 members. In 1994, New Birth became a member of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship. [2]
In April 2000, Pastor Jamal Bryant founded the Empowerment Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore, Maryland, and served for 18 years. [2] In December 2018, he became pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, Georgia. [3] [4]
He moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 2001, with his wife Danielle and two children, to serve as the worship minister at New Birth. [3] He later founded The dReam Center Church of Atlanta in 2006, where Tasha Cobbs was on pastoral staff. [3] His wife, Danielle, is also a pastor at the church. [3]
The church was the setting for her mother's funeral. Despite her leaving of the church coinciding with Bishop Eddie Long's settlement agreement in sexual misconduct lawsuits he had fought since September 2010, King said that she had planned to leave New Birth Missionary Baptist Church for weeks.
He was elected and consecrated the 106th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church at the 1988 General Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. He earned his B.A. degree in 1965 at Morgan State University , his M.Th. degree in 1970 at the Boston University School of Theology, and his D.Min. degree at the Colgate Rochester Divinity School in 1975.
