Mary Fallin (/ ˈ f æ l ɪ n /; née Copeland; born December 9, 1954) [1] is an American politician who served as the 27th governor of Oklahoma from 2011 to 2019. A member of the Republican Party, she was elected in 2010 and reelected in 2014.
The Constitution of Oklahoma calls for the election of a governor every four years, to take office on the second Monday in January after the election. [22] Originally, governors could not succeed themselves, with no limit on total terms; [ 23 ] a 1966 constitutional amendment allowed them to succeed themselves once. [ 24 ]
The governor and lieutenant governor are elected on separate ballots and are not running mates. This presents a chance that they may represent different political parties, as was the case from 2003 to 2007 when Democratic governor Brad Henry and Republican lieutenant governor Mary Fallin were in office.
