Eight regional tournaments were held to determine the participants in the World Series. Regional tournaments were contested in double-elimination format, with three regions consisting of six teams, and five consisting of eight, for a total of 58 teams participating in the tournament, up from 56 in 2017.
It was the first NCAA Division III tournament after the cancellation of the 2020 tournament as had been done with each of the Division tournaments for baseball. The tournament concluded with eight teams competing at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the championship.
